Dean Search

The University of Cincinnati invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College-Conservatory of Music (CCM).

The Dean is responsible for overseeing undergraduate and graduate student education within CCM; promoting scholarly and creative excellence; monitoring and securing financial resources and budgets; enhancing revenue, especially by engaging in private fundraising; strategic and operational planning; program review and enhancement; governmental, University and campus compliance; and all personnel matters, including management of promotion and tenure processes.

Previous Decanal Search Updates

On Oct. 17, 2017, Interim Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Kristi Nelson announced that UC will be launching the search for a permanent dean of the college in the coming weeks.

Board Rule 3361:10-6-02 lays out the process that must be followed for decanal searches and the establishment and composition of the decanal search committee.

Matt Serra, Vice Provost for Academic Personnel, will work with Amy Beegle, Chair of the CCM Faculty Committee, regarding the election of faculty to the search committee. Greer Glazer, Dean of the College of Nursing, has kindly agreed to chair the search.

  • Who will chair the Search Committee?

An outside dean or senior administrator with a faculty appointment must chair the search. Provost Nelson has appointed Dr. Greer Glazer, Dean of the College of Nursing, as Chair of the Search Committee

  • Who will be on the Search Committee?

University Board Rule 3361:10-6-02 calls for the Provost to appoint the chair, two faculty members and two students. The CCM faculty will elect three faculty members to serve on the committee. In special cases the Provost can appoint up to two other members to the committee.

  • Will there be CCM faculty and student representatives on the Search Committee?

The Search Committee will include five CCM faculty members on the committee: Provost Nelson will appoint two, and the CCM faculty will elect three. Provost Nelson will appoint two student members to the committee.

  • Who will provide staff support to the Search Committee?

The Provost or President will provide the Search Committee with staff support and office help.

  • What is the timetable for the search for CCM’s next permanent dean?

The Provost Office establishes the timetable for all decanal searches. Provost Nelson will set the deadline and desirable date for soliciting applications and completing the search with the Search Committee.

  • Will the search include a consultant or outside search firm?

Board Rule 3361-10-6-02 allows for the use of an outside search firm but does not require it. If an outside search firm is used, the Search Committee must approve the selection.

  • How will the search for a permanent dean affect CCM’s budget?

Decanal searches are funded from the Provost Office; the CCM decanal search will not affect the college budget.

  • How will faculty, staff and students be informed about the search?

A memo from Provost Nelson was distributed through the faculty, staff and student listservs on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017. During past CCM decanal searches, a webpage was devoted to the search. The same is planned for this search. The internal proceedings of the committee will be confidential in keeping with Board Rule 3361-10-6-02.

  • Can anonymous information be submitted to the committee?

The committee cannot accept anonymous information and opinions. All written material submitted to and retained by the search committee is subject to disclosure under Ohio law.

  • Will the Search Committee keep minutes?

Yes, the Search Committee is required to keep minutes of its official actions.

  • Will the job description and vacancy notice be made public?

The job description and other requirements and criteria will be distributed among the university community and posted on the web.

  • How many candidates will be brought to campus for interviews?

At an orientation session with the Search Committee, Provost Nelson will discuss with the search committee the number of candidates brought to campus for interviews, the criteria and objectives of the search, and the deadline or desirable date for soliciting applications and completing the search.

  • Will faculty and students be given the opportunity to interact with the finalists?

The Search Committee will schedule on-campus interviews with groups from the college, including faculty, administrators, staff, students, alumni and community members.

  • Who all will be invited to interview the finalists during the on campus interviews?

The Search Committee can invite the following individuals and groups to hold separate interviews with the finalists: the president, the provost, the current dean, associate and assistant deans, unit heads of the college, the college Faculty Committee, appropriate student groups, representatives from special interest groups and relevant community groups. At all interviews, the participants will be invited to provide comments to the Search Committee.

  • Who will make the ultimate decision for CCM’s next permanent dean?

The Search Committee will select by vote the person or persons it wishes to recommend to President Pinto and Provost Nelson. The President and Provost will then determine which, if any, of the finalists to recommend to the Board of Trustees.
