General Questions

Do I need to apply separately to the University of Cincinnati?
No. CCM’s online application is all you need. If you are interested in applying for a second major in another UC College, please contact us for information before applying.

Do I have to apply online?
Yes. We no longer offer paper applications. The only exceptions are for: students transferring to CCM from another college within the University of Cincinnati; current CCM students moving from an MM program to a PhD, DMA, or AD within the same major area; students who have a fee waiver or tuition remission; and students who are facing some extenuating circumstances that prevent them from applying online. These students should contact our office to receive special applications.

How do I schedule an audition/interview?
You must complete the online application and pay the application fee to be scheduled for an audition. The online application will allow you to select your audition/interview date preferences, and we will schedule according to those. You cannot schedule an audition before your application has been submitted or by phone or e-mail.

How will I know which audition/interview date I have been assigned?
When you are scheduled for your audition or interview, we will send you an e-mail directing you to our audition confirmation website. This online confirmation will include your date and preliminary audition time, and you will be able to access it 2-3 weeks after your application is received. You will receive a second e-mail notice when your audition time is finalized, usually 7-10 days before the audition. If you will be auditioning or interviewing in Cincinnati, we recommend that you set aside the whole day when making your travel plans. Regional audition days are shorter.

Is it better to audition earlier, or to audition in Cincinnati instead of at a regional location?
No. We consider every student equally, regardless of where and when they audition. All of our different audition dates and locations have comparable acceptance rates, and you do not improve your chances by auditioning on a certain day or at a certain place. Our admissions committee is always aware of how many students have yet to audition when making decisions. If you are taking an instrumental or classical voice audition at a regional location, faculty from your major area will not be present; your audition will be videotaped so that they can review your audition personally. CCM faculty will always be present at regional musical theatre and dramatic performance auditions and at theater design and production interviews.

Do I need to send in a pre-screening recording before I can audition?
Currently, all students applying for flute, and conducting are required to submit a tape for pre-screening before approval for a live audition. Voice applicants who wish to audition in Cincinnati must send a videotape or DVD. Composition majors must send in a portfolio of scores and should include recordings. Flute students must send in an audio tape/CD with the repertoire listed in the Application Handbook. Conducting students should also consult the Application Handbook for instructions pertinent to the specific conducting program to which they are applying.

What are the requirements for the voice pre-screening recording?
Undergraduate voice students (including Music Education majors auditioning for a concentration in voice) should include two art songs, one in English and one in a foreign language. Graduate voice students should include 3-4 pieces, including 2 art songs and 1 or 2 arias. Applicants should send a video recording or CD. Please note that the recordings should be postmarked no later than the Friday following Thanksgiving. This will give the voice faculty enough time to evaluate your recording and decide if you should be invited for an audition in Cincinnati. If you are planning to audition at one of our regional audition cities, you do not need to submit a pre-screening recording. You simply select one of our regional audition cities for your audition when completing the online application.

May I send in a recorded audition?
This varies based on the degree and the major for which you wish to be considered. Some programs allow recorded auditions, some allow recorded auditions for students living outside the mainland United States, and others require a live audition. Please consult the Application Handbook for the policies regarding the degree and program to which you are applying.

What repertoire should I perform for my audition?
Consult the CCM Application Handbook for a list of audition requirements for your degree and major. The CCM Admissions Office is unable to offer advice on the selection repertoire or to comment on whether a specific piece is appropriate. These questions should be directed to your music teacher. Musical Theatre applicants should carefully review all of the audition guidelines from the Musical Theatre faculty.

What scholarships are available?
All CCM applicants are automatically considered for a talent-based scholarship. These are awarded in the early spring, based on audition results and the recommendations of our faculty. Undergraduate students may also qualify for the Cincinnatus Scholarship, awarded by the University to academically qualified students.

What need-based financial aid is available?
Need-based aid (loans, grants, and work-study) is available through the University of Cincinnati, distributed by the Student Financial Aid Office. To be considered, you will need to submit a FAFSA using the code 003125 for the University of Cincinnati.

Undergraduate

Are there minimum test score and GPA requirements?
The University of Cincinnati does have minimum academic standards, however CCM students are generally evaluated based on their application and audition, and applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements may still be admitted to their program. For further details on the minimum academic standards, contact the UC Admissions Office.

Do I need to write an essay?
Undergraduate students applying for Electronic Media or Theater Design and Production will need to write a short essay, as outlined in the Application Handbook. These are the only two undergraduate programs at CCM for which an application essay is required.

Can I complete a double major?
CCM offers a double major in Music Education and Music Performance. You may also double major between two bachelor’s of music in performance programs, but you will need to complete a separate CCM application for each major. Double majors in Education and Performance need to complete only one online application. CCM students also qualify to major or minor in many of the 34 majors offered through the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences (due to space considerations, some exceptions are communications, political science, and psychology). We recommend that you contact the Arts & Sciences department that interests you as a double major regarding dual enrollment.

Can I minor in music, or take music classes as a non-major?
CCM does not offer minors in any area or program. Some CCM classes are open to non-majors by permission of the faculty, and students can take private lessons through the CCM Preparatory Department. Open to all students at UC are the Bearcat Marching Band, University Men’s and Women’s Choruses, and the UC Symphony Orchestra.

Will my AP, IB, or CLEP credits transfer to UC?
Advanced Placement:
The AP Transfer Key will tell you exactly what credit you will receive at UC for your AP credits. UC is on the quarter system, and many courses are three quarter credits. For example, if a student receives 9 quarters credits of psychology, this is generally a one year sequence of Psychology 101, 102, 103.

International Baccalaureate:
UC will award credit for International Baccalaureate courses. The IB Key will be forthcoming. In the meantime, contact Robert Fee, Sr. Assistant Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences, for details. He can be reached at 513-556-5860 or Robert.Fee@uc.edu.

CLEP Test:
The Clep Test Key will give you information on what credits the University of Cincinnati will receive for any tests you have taken. It is up to your particular college to determine if the credits from your CLEP Test will fulfill requirements for your particular CCM major.

What is the College Prep Form, and who needs to fill it out?
The College Prep Form helps the University of Cincinnati ensure that you meet the admissions requirements. Everyone who is required to send high school transcripts should submit this form. Ask your guidance counselor or principal to complete the form and send it to UC with your high school transcript. The College Prep Form can be found on page A5 of the University of Cincinnati Viewbook, or you may print it off of the web.

What is the music transfer form, and who needs to fill it out?
CCM honors the Code of Ethics established by the National Association of Schools of Music. Therefore, students applying to transfer to CCM from a program at another university or college must have the Music Transfer Form signed by a representative of the school where they are currently enrolled. We must have this form before you can be considered for a CCM scholarship.

Do transfer students need to submit high school transcripts and test scores?
You are required to submit high school transcripts if you have earned fewer than 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours of college credit. Test scores are not required if you graduated from high school more than one year before the date you intend to enroll at UC.

Is it possible for me to audition for multiple schools in one day at the Unified Theatre Auditions?
Yes. Once you have applied, we can work with you to schedule audition time that will not conflict with your other audition(s) at the National Unified Auditions. The best way to accommodate multiple auditions is by submitting your application early so that you can receive your first choice of audition dates. Audition slots fill quickly as deadlines approach!

Graduate

Do I need to take the GRE?
All applicants to master’s and doctoral programs are required to take the GRE General Exam. If you are applying for the Master of Fine Arts or an Artist Diploma degree, GRE scores are not required. If you are applying for an MA in Arts Administration, you may take either the GRE or the GMAT. For the dual MBA/MA program, you must submit GMAT scores. If you are a performance major you may wait until after your audition to submit GRE scores, but you cannot be considered for an admissions decision or a scholarship until your scores have been received.

What GRE score does CCM require?
There is no minimum score. However, your GRE scores will be taken into consideration by the Admissions Committee along with the other information in your file.

What graduate assistantships are available, and how do I apply for one?
Assistantships are available in all majors except composition (composition majors can apply for the Theory GA), euphonium, harpsichord, and saxophone. These assistantships are awarded based on merit, not financial need, and are distributed based on the recommendation of our faculty. Assistantships in accompanying, jazz studies, music education, music history, secondary piano, theory, trombone, and trumpet require an additional audition/interview. There will be a section on the graduate online application to indicate your interest in these assistantships. To apply for a music education, secondary piano, or studio accompanying GA, a supplemental application form is required for pre-screening purposes.

Who should use the new Graduate Paper Application?
Students currently enrolled in an MM program at CCM who are moving to the DMA/PhD or AD in the same major or instrument should use the paper application. They must not have any gap in their attendance between degrees (except summer) and they must fully complete one degree before beginning another. They pay only the CCM $60 fee.

May I apply to enroll in the winter or spring quarter?
Yes, but you must first have the approval of the faculty in your major area.

How can I defer my term of enrollment once I have been accepted?
We will hold all materials on file for one year, but if you do not enroll within one academic year of your application (fall through summer quarters), you will need to apply online and pay the application fees again.

Unfortunately, CCM cannot accept students, even conditionally, who have not met the TOEFL requirements.

How do I get the I-20?
You must be accepted before an I-20 can be issued. When you are accepted, you will need to verify funding using the Financial Certification Form. If you are using your own personal funds, then you will need to show funds for all years of study. Undergraduates must verify funds for $36,477 per year, and Graduates $34,500. You must verify total funds from official sources. All amounts are subject to change. If you are awarded a scholarship, it will be deducted from the above totals. CCM does not issue the I-20. The International Student Services Office will mail your I-20 after they receive all required documents, including the financial certification form. You will find here answers to the most Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) of the International Services Office.

Do international students qualify for financial aid?
Unfortunately, international students do not qualify for need-based financial aid. However, you can still receive a talent-based scholarship or assistantship.
