THEY WERE YOU - Musical

THE SONGS OF TOM JONES AND HARVEY SCHMIDT

Lyrics by Tom Jones
Music by Harvey Schmidt
Devised and directed by Aubrey Berg
Stephen Goers, musical arrangements
Katie Johannigman, choreographer

Dear Friends,
The Musical Theatre program is working on an exciting new project. They Were You is a musical revue of songs by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, authors of the world's longest-running musical, The Fantasticks. It features songs from their musicals, well known and obscure, including Celebration, 110 in the Shade, The Bone Room, Colette Collage, Mirette, Philemon, Roadside, I Do! I Do! and TheFantasticks . Additionally, songs written for revues or cut from shows are also featured.
We have arranged the songs thematically, reflecting a movement from Innocence to Experience. As the title indicates, Jones and Schmidt reflect the human condition with humor, compassion and wry affection. The songs capture the universality of the everyday: adolescence, growth, relationships, marriage, disillusion, maturity and self-knowledge. The show celebrates the theatre as a place of creativity and the resilience of the human spirit as it turns evermore towards joy.
It has been a great adventure for me and our talented "stars of tomorrow" to create this piece based on the works of a legendary writing team. Please join us for the world premiere in the Cohen Family Studio Theater. Tom Jones is expected to be in attendance at weekend performances.
