The Electronic Media Division has a new way of assigning faculty advisors this year.
The E-Media faculty changed the system mainly to help incoming students who will likely still be here when UC goes to a semester calendar in the fall of 2012.
The new system assigns advisors based on the student’s last name. Each professor has about 25 students to advise. Students will stay with the same advisor all the way through their years in E-Media.
Here’s the breakdown of advisors for current students:
A-B – Raul Barcelona
C-F – Kevin Burke
G-Hi – Peter DePietro
Hj-L – Marjorie Fox
M-P – Jane Friedman
Q-Si – Tom Haines
Sj-Z – Dr. John Owens
Previously, students were assigned an advisor according to their year in the program. So a student would have a different advisor each year.
Senior Nick Solimine said, “I didn’t even know who my advisor was. I had to look it up every time I had a question.”
Students welcome the change.
“A dependable academic advising system is a good reassurance for E-Media students, one less thing to feel uncertain about as they develop intellectually and begin moving toward a career path”, said junio
Professor Fox said the advisors aren’t supposed to select classes for students but to answer questions and provide general guidance, especially as the conversion to semesters approaches.
Students can meet with their advisor during scheduled office hours or by appointment. If students are inquiring about classes they need, they should bring a copy of their degree audit to appointments. Degree audits can be downloaded at OneStop’s Web site under “My Classes”.
