Welcome Back: Larry Hamby '73

A major figure in the recording industry for many years will visit E-Media/CCM October 4 and 5, 2012.  The special guest is Larry Hamby, a 1973 graduate of the E-Media (formerly broadcasting) program.

The list of artists Hamby has worked with reads like a “Who’s Who” of recording greats.  These include John Denver, Bob Dylan, Kenny Rogers, the Carpenters, Moody Blues, Michael Jackson, Heart, REO Speedwagon, Cheap Trick, Willie Nelson, George Winston, Etta James, Yo Yo Ma, and Joshua Bell.   He has also signed many artists, such as Mary Chapin Carpenter, Imogen Heap, and Sharon Isbin.

Hamby was the recording project supervisor for Michael Jackson’s album, Thriller, the largest selling album of all time.

There are two opportunities for E-Media students to hear Larry Hamby. The faculty hopes all students can attend one class or the other.

2:30-3:25 p.m.     Media Issues and Ethics class.  Emery 3244

“I have always enjoyed the chance to speak to students about the music industry. Most of the time I learn at least as much from them as they do from me.  ” Hamby said.

The visit on October 4 and 5 will be the first time Hamby has been back at UC since he graduated in 1973.

“Having the opportunity to finally visit my very own alma mater and join in some classes feels not only right, but exciting.  It should be a fun couple of days,” he added.

Hamby began his career working with Jerry Weintraub/Management III in Los Angeles.  Since then, he has worked in various capacities with major companies such as CBS, Sony Music, BMG Music Entertainment, RCA Victor, and Warner Brothers Music in Los Angeles, Nashville, and New York.

Hamby will tour the E-Media facilities and will meet with the Advanced Music Production class on Thursday, Oct. 4.   He is planning to attend an E-Media Alumni event Friday evening.

For Electronic Media students interested in audio recording and the music business, this is an opportunity you cannot miss.
