MSC Requirements

Passport and Visa Requirements

Q. Do I need a passport to travel?
A. You will need a valid (current) passport to travel to and from Germany. You will need to be in possession of a US passport no later than 6/01/11. Inquire at your local post office which branch in your hometown handles passport requests. Detailed information, such as fees, number of photo IDs, etc., will be part of the passport application package. Once you submit your application , it will take several weeks before your passport is issued to you. Therefore, take care of this requirement as early as possible.
* You will need to be in possession of a passport by 6/1/12!

Q. Do I need a Visa?
A. No, unless you plan to stay in Germany for more than 90 days. If you intend to travel before and after the 90 day long Munich Summer Curriculum, then you will need a visa. You can obtain a visa from a German consulate near you: German Consulate General, Chicago, 676 N. Michigan Ave., Ste 3200, Chicago, Ill 60611; phone: 312-202-0480, for example. You can visit the German Consulate website for more information.

Q. Do I need special immunization or any other medical examinations?
A. No, unless you plan to stay more than 90 days. This will become part of your visa application. It also can be handled while residing in Germany during your first 90 days. Again, detailed information is available from a German Consulate.

Q. Do I need medical insurance?
A. You are covered by a medical insurance plan for the 10 week long Munich Summer Curriculum. This is a basic insurance plan equivalent to our American student coverage. Any supplemental policy you deem more appropriate can be purchased from a US company, such as AAA.

COMPUTER REQUIREMENTS

The Munich Summer Curriculum requires all students to have an Apple MacBook Pro.

It is also recommended that each student purchase a power adapter for other devices such as hard drives, hair dryers, camera chargers, etc... Some devices have a power converter box built in (such as the MacBook Pro), meaning it converts the 220 volt AC standard European power to the American 110 volt AC standard.  However, you will still need a European style plug, which you can purchase at stores like Radio Shack and Brookstone.

Some devices do not have a converter box built in, in which case you will need a more expensive conversion kit that comes with a converter plug.  Again, these plugs can be purchased at stores like Radio Shack and Brookstone.
