Fall Semester

VERDI’S DON CARLOS, ACTS I – III
CCM Concert Orchestra, Chamber Choir, Chorale, and UC Men’s and Women’s Choruses

Featuring CCM faculty, student and alumni soloists including Helen Lyons, Barbara Honn, Stacey Rishoi, Leah DeGruyl, Marco Panuccio, Tom Baresel and Gustav Andreassen

In celebration of the 200th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi’s birth (Oct. 10, 1813), CCM proudly presents the 1867 Paris Opera version of the grand opera Don Carlos in concert. CCM’s Concert Orchestra performs Act I through the first half of Act III of Verdi’s most complete operatic statement at 2 p.m., followed by the Philharmonia performing the second half of Act III through Act V beginning at 7 p.m. This production will be sung in French.

Featuring Joseph and Frances Jones Poetker Visiting Artist Jeffrey Thompson, tenor, singing the role of “Evangelist”

J.S. Bach’s visceral rendering of the St. John Passion is offered in a unique staged performance, illuminating the dramatic intensity of this cherished Baroque masterwork.

The UC Men’s and Women’s Choruses and Cabaret Singers, comprised of students from all 13 UC colleges, are joined by guest choirs to present traditional and contemporary choral works featuring Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms and Gustav Holst's Two Psalms.

The CCM Choral Department offers a varied program of music from the Renaissance through the 21st century. Highlights include CCM faculty member Miguel Roig-Francolí’s Missa Pro Pace and Rossini’s operatic Petite Messe Solennelle.

Featuring guest artists Michael Maniaci, countertenor; Eric Jurenas, countertenor; and Steven Rickards, countertenor; and CCM soloists

The most significant American oratorio of the late 20th century, Adams’ El Niño retells the traditional biblical story of the birth of Jesus, incorporating poetry of Rosario Castellanos, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Hildegard von Bingen, Gabriela Mistral, Vicente Huidobro and Rubén Dario, and selected passages from the Wakefield Mystery Plays, Martin Luther’s Christmas Sermon, the Gospel of Luke and several Gnostic Gospels from the Apocrypha.

The UC Men’s and Women’s Choruses and Cabaret Singers, comprised of students from all 13 UC colleges, perform a variety of classical, popular and jazz tunes including choral works written from a feminine perspective, multi-cultural pieces and other selections from the upcoming UC Choruses tour to Charleston, South Carolina.
