The Cincinnati Junior Youth Wind Ensemble (Jr. CYWE) is a high level performing ensemble designed for 6th-8th grade instrumentalists in the Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, and surrounding areas. The group rehearses on Sunday evenings from 5:30 - 7pm, and they perform three concerts throughout the year (September - June). The group is organized through the College-Conservatory of Music Preparatory Department at the University of Cincinnati. Jr. CYWE is led by Dr. Ann Porter, Assistant Professor of Music Education with CCM. This year's Assistant Conductors are Brian Huhtala and Emily Power-Huhtala, both Music Education graduate assistant at CCM.
The goal of Jr. CYWE is to provide a positive musical experience to achieve the highest musical standards for all of those involved. The group accepts flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium (baritone), tuba, string bass, and percussion performers. A wide variety of music literature is performed that is meant to challenge the performers and offer an enrichment opportunity in addition to their current band experiences at school.
Students interested in trying out for Jr. CYWE must set up an audition (see Registration Info), which their parents can do through the Preparatory Department at CCM. Auditions occur in early September, roughly a week or two before the start of the rehearsal schedule for the year. Students who are accepted must pay a registration fee for the year's participation to the Preparatory Department. Students also MUST be participating in their school band program (if offered at their school).
Students who participate in Jr. CYWE (or those who are past the Jr. CYWE age) are able to continue their enrichment in 9th-12th grade in the Senior CYWE, provided they are accepted through their audition process.
