Jr. CYWE Audition Dates
Those who wish to participate in the Cincinnati Junior Youth Wind Ensemble (Jr. CYWE) must schedule an audition time through the College-Conservatory of Music Preparatory Department (contact info listed below). Students wishing to audition must meet the following criteria:
Entering the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade for the current school year
Play either flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, saxophone (alto, tenor, baritone), French horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium (baritone), tuba, string bass, or percussion.
A minimum of 2 years playing experience
Participation in their school band (providing their school offers a band class)
AUDITIONS
Auditions are held at the beginning of September. Students will be asked to perform the following:
Concert B-flat, F, and E-flat scales from memory (Percussionists play these on the mallet instruments)
One lyrical (melodic - slower and song-like) selection
One technical (faster notes and articulations) selection
Sight-reading selection
Percussionists - Prepare your snare drum rudiments (rolls, flams, drags, paradiddles, etc.), a short snare drum etude, and a short mallet etude
The audition material can be selected from a band method book, band music, or a book used in private study. Auditions slots are 10 minutes each, so plan your selections accordingly. Please plan on arriving at least 10 minutes before your audition time to allow time for warm-up and set-up.
REGISTRATION
Students who are selected for participation in Jr. CYWE must register through the CCM Preparatory Department and pay a registration fee (fee TBD for 2008-2009). Students are expected to make a commitment to the following as part of their participation in the group:
Attendance at our weekly SUNDAY evening rehearsals (5:30-7pm).
Attendance at our three concerts (Fall, Winter, Spring). These concerts are on MONDAY evenings.
Prompt notification at least two weeks in advance of any possible absences from rehearsals. (Frequent absences may result in dismissal from the group).
A positive attitude and respectful rehearsal behavior to all conductors and participating students.
Wearing of proper concert attire at all concerts.
Students (and their parents!) who feel they can make this type of commitment are encouraged to try out for Jr. CYWE.
