Edward Al Hearn
Outreach Performance Skills
Al Hearn was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. He studied
the Euphonium under Peter Sullivan of the Montreal Symphony and Brian Bowman of
the United States Navy Band and subsequently entered the Canadian Armed Forces
as professional euphonium player. After 11 years of service he retired and
enrolled at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and completed a Bachelor of
Music, Euphonium Performance.
He then attended the University of Michigan and
completed a Master of Music, Euphonium Performance degree. At this time he
founded the Outreach in the Performing Arts Program at the University of
Michigan School of Music. He directed this performance outreach program and
taught two related courses for seven years. During this time he entered the
Ph.D. program at the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education
at the University of Michigan and specialized in curriculum design, higher
education leadership, change management, and experiential education. His
dissertation was a case study of higher education school of music/ K-8 school
education outreach partnerships.
He is now the Director of Academic Community
Partnerships and the University of Cincinnati.
