Jazz Explosion

Location: Lakota West High School, 8940 Union Centre Blvd., West Chester
For students who have a strong interest in learning both jazz improvisation and authentic jazz styles. Open to any instrumentalist, but some limitations may be made in certain sections of the group. Please prepare one excerpt in a swing style and one excerpt in another style of your choice. Percussionists should be ready to perform examples of swing, rock and bossa nova styles on drum set. Having an excerpt to perform on vibes is encouraged, but not required. Prospective students should review the Jazz Explosion policy notice.

Jazz Combo

Grades: 9-adult
Time: Between noon and 5 p.m. Sundays, six sessions a semester
Cost: $190 per semester, $125 if enrolled in private lessons
Learn jazz in a small-group setting just like the pros! Members of the Jazz Combos learn to play jazz standards and contemporary tunes with a primary emphasis on improvisation and small-group internaction. There will be several performance opportunities through the year. Please call the office and consult the CCM Jazz Combo guide for more information.
Auditions:
Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17-18, 2011. Call 513-556-2595 for appointment.
Requirements:
- Major scales (up to 4 sharps and 4 flats). Drummers will be asked to play swing, rock and Latin grooves.
- Blues in F head (Tenor Madness, Now’s the Time, Billie’s Bounce) and two choruses of improvisation. Bassists will be asked to "walk" bass lines as well.
- Sight reading

CCM Youth Jazz Orchestra (HS Jazz Orchestra)
Director: Todd Hartman
Class times: 5:30-7 p.m., Mondays
Cost: $300 per year
Auditions: Sept. 26 and Oct. 3.Call 513-556-2595 for an audition time. Rehearsals begin Oct. 10. Prepare one excerpt in a swing style and one in another style of your choice. Each excerpt should be performed along with a CD or iPod play-along recording provided by the student. Improvising after performing the melody is optional, but encouraged, especially for students desiring a "solo chair." Students also will be asked to sight-read. Percussionists may be asked to demonstrate a variety of styles and to perform scales and/or an excerpt on vibraphone.

The Youth Jazz Orchestra (click here for student handbook) offers a high-level challenge for advanced high school-age students in grades 10-12 in a big-band setting. Emphasis will be placed on developing professional musical, improvisational and performance skills.
