Music Performance : Voice

What is Music Performance : Voice?

The Master of Music degree in voice at the UC College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) offers excellent training with the faculty of one of the premiere voice/opera programs in the country. Emphasis is on the development of skills: technical, linguistic, musical, and academic. Fundamentals of good vocal technique are instilled through both art song and operatic repertoire. With increased maturity, more demanding repertoire will be introduced.

Singers must learn to perform in a variety of languages; at minimum, English, Italian, German, and French. Grammar study in each of the three foreign languages is a prerequisite for the degree program. Music skills and understanding are developed through participation in operatic productions, choral ensembles, music theory, and music history classes.

Career Possibilities

Graduates of the CCM voice program may find professional performance opportunities with opera companies, orchestras and other organizations that present classical music concerts. With an advanced degree, teaching at the college level is a possible career path.

Most graduating students may decide to continue vocal studies either privately, or in an artist diploma or doctorate of music program. Professional singing is an extremely competitive field, and sufficient vocal and musical maturity are essential. CCM has an excellent record of graduates who have been engaged by American and European opera comanies and symphony orchestras such as: The Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco, Glyndebourne, Berlin, Houston Grand Opera, English National Opera, London Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Washington Opera, Concert Gebouw, Wiener Staadsoper, among others. In addition, many CCM graduates hold teaching positions as artist-teachers on the faculties of many music departments across the country.

UC Advantages and Special Opportunities

The UC College-Conservatory of Music adheres to very high standards in the training of young singers. An excellent faculty coupled with a well-earned international reputation allows CCM to be very selective in the admissions process. The facilities are superb and attract a knowledgeable audience to student performances.  CCM has an unusually dedicated number of patrons in the community who sponsor students in the form of scholarship and audition assistance.

Performance opportunities abound for the CCM singers through high quality operatic productions, numerous ensembles, workshop performances, and religious institutions in the Cincinnati area.
