ASCAP Spotlights CCM Sophomore Piyatut "Bill" Hemstapat

CCM Commercial Music Production Major Piyatut "Bill" Hemstapat.

CCM sophomore Piyatut "Bill" Hemstapat was recently selected as a "Composer to Watch" by the the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP)! The 20-year-old film/media composer, record producer, pianist, and keyboardist is a bachelor of music student in commercial music production at CCM.

Originally from Chiangmai, Thailand, Hemstapat is the first recipient of CCM’s Clifford R. and Betty J. Dannenfelser Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was established by a generous $1 million donation, bequeathed from the late Betty Jean (Seeger) Dannenfelser in order to recruit generations of the very best students, allowing CCM to maintain its international reputation as one of the world’s leading conservatories.

Hemstapat’s path to CCM is nothing short of inspirational. His first piano lesson at the age of eight thrust him into the world of music. In 2006, Hemstapat and his parents moved from Bangkok to Chiangmai, where he joined the school band as a flutist.

In 2009 he auditioned and was accepted into Mahidol College of Music’s pre-college program, one of the best-known music colleges in the ASEAN region. After studying flute with Professor Hiroshi Matsushima at Mahidol, Hemstapat went on to receive the CCM Honors Scholarship to further his studies in commercial music production. At CCM, he began studying with Jazz Studies faculty members Phil DeGreg and Kim Pensyl.

Hemstapat has scored a wide range of media including short films, television commercials, web series and cartoon animations for Thailand’s various studios, production houses and publishing companies.

In 2012, he composed additional music for the popular TV series Muad Opas (SS2). More recently, he scored an educational animation entitled La Flora and the feature film My Bromance, which had a theatrical release in Thailand in February of 2014.

He also serves as the keyboardist and producer of Lucid Dream Syndrome, a progressive rock/metal band in Thailand. Recently, Hemstapat was chosen to score Garin X Guardian, a feature film based on one of the best selling black fantasy comic/novels in Thailand.

In June 2013, Hemstapat participated in the New York University/ASCAP Foundation Film Scoring Workshop, one of the most well-known film scoring workshops in the U.S., where he was one of six composers selected to be featured as ASCAP’s “Composers to Watch.” Visit to view his ASCAP spotlight profile and hear samples of his work!
