CCM's Top-Rated Musical Theatre Program Set the Bar for Nationwide Training

Student Video: An Introduction to CCM Musical Theatre

Established in 1969, CCM’s BFA Musical Theatre program is the oldest in the country and was the first of its kind. The National Association of Schools of Theatre used CCM’s program in formulating the guidelines for accreditation of Musical Theatre programs nationwide.

The CCM Admissions office recommends for students to apply by November 1 to ensure an audition date for the Musical Theatre program. The audition consists of three sections: dance, vocal and acting. They are held in Cincinnati in December, January and February. Additional auditions are held in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles as part of the Unified Theatre Auditions in February.

The Musical Theatre program at CCM is widely recognized for its “triple-threat” approach to training. Many of CCM’s Musical Theatre graduates are following careers as performers and creative artists in every facet of the entertainment industry — from the stage to the screen and behind-the-scenes.

In the video below, current students and alumni discuss their experiences in the program and give advice to young artists thinking of pursuing a career in Musical Theatre.

"Don't be scared to pursue your dreams...If you really love theatre and you really love art, then this is a great place to come." - Donelvan Thigpen, Class of 2018

At CCM, students receive comprehensive conservatory training to help singers, dancers and actors become accomplished professional Musical Theatre performers. The program includes vocal coaching that integrates voice and acting skills, extensive dance training and a rigorous acting curriculum that includes cabaret techniques, audition skills and acting for the camera.

Students participate in four musicals presented in three dynamically different state-of-the-art theatre spaces each season, as well as showcases that bookend the training experience. The Freshman Showcase is performed in Cincinnati and the Senior Showcase is presented for agents and casting directors in New York City.

Professor Aubrey Berg has headed the program as the Patricia A. Corbett Distinguished Chair of Musical Theater at CCM for the past 27 years. CCM's world-renowned faculty work closely with students throughout the four-year program to position them for success after graduation.

"When I stand on the stage, I know who I am. I know what I want to say, I know what I have to share and CCM and Aubrey Berg have taught me that." - Lawson Young (BFA Musical Theatre, 2015)
