The Ballet Ensemble features works by the Dance Department faculty and guest choreographers with music provided by CCM Ensembles. The Choreographers' Showcase provides students an outlet for choreographic experimentation and added performance opportunities. In addition to the Dance Department''s three annual concerts, there are several informal showings throughout the year. Qualified students may have the opportunity to perform with professional regional dance companies including Cincinnati Ballet, Dayton Ballet, Louisvilee Ballet and BalletMet while continuing their studies at the conservatory.
CCM Dance Graduates have performed with companies such as the Royal Danish Ballet, Teatr Wielki-Opera Narodowa, Ballet Du Capitole of France, Les Grands Ballets Canadians, Martha Graham Dance Company, Louisville Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Ballet West, BalletMet, Dayton Ballet, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Nashville Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, Sarasota Ballet, Alabama Ballet, Eugene Ballet Company, Nevada Ballet, Smuin Ballet, Ballet Pensacola, Columbus Dance Theater, The Ballet Theater of Maryland, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo and many other classic and contemporary dance companies. Other alumni serve as teachers and administrators in performing arts organizations, university dance programs, dance schools and private dance studios.
The Dance Department keeps its finger on the pulse of the current dance world. Guest artists in residence have included Laura Alonso, Johanna Wilt, Jimmy Cunningham, Ben NeedhamWood, Oglcan Borova, Anthony Krutzkamp, Douglas Becker, Bart Cook, Sean Curran, Suzanne Farrell, Vivi Flindt, Maureen Fleming, William Pizzuto, Marianna Tcherkassky, and Maria Vegh. Master classes with regional company directors such as Victoria Morgan, Edwaard Liang, Gerard Charles, Bruce Simpson, Norbe Risco, Karen Burke and Adam Skulte occur when they are available. Master classes from artists with Paul Taylor Dance Company, Jose Limon Dance Foundation, Balanchine Trust, Twyla Tharp Dance Foundation, Arpino Fundation, Pilobolus, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Joysanne Sidimus, Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Co., among others, complement the department's curriculum while exposing students to professionals currently in the field.
Dance majors have numerous opportunities to perform throughout the year. Emphasizing a balance between discipline and dedication to one's art with a holistic approach to health and wellness, the Dance Department at CCM is one of the few ballet programs in the nation requiring a year of somatic studies for dance including work in the Yoga and the Pilates Method. The Department also provides a health and fitness program supervised by qualified professionals to ensure the overall wellness of the dancers.
