For students in 9th - 12th grades

In partnership with CCM’s Collegiate Wind Studies program and the Music Education division, CCM Preparatory presents the only wind ensemble for high school students in the greater Cincinnati area. The Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble (CYWE) is for musicians who play flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, string bass, and percussion. The ensemble brings together students from diverse musical backgrounds to perform quality wind ensemble literature.
The Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble is a skill-enhancing and enriching experience that supplements but does not replace students’ experience in their own high school bands. CYWE rehearses once a week and time is divided between full rehearsals, small group sectionals, and chamber ensembles. Attendance is expected at all rehearsals and concerts.
This is an auditioned ensemble. All slots have been filled for the 2019-20 school year.
Auditions are informal, about 8-10 minutes long, and are composed of the three parts listed below. A warm-up area will be provided. Please arrive early to warm-up and be prepared to perform on time.
CYWE Audition Requirements
1) Prepared Solo – Prepare approximately 2 minutes of a solo of your choice that you feel best represents your musicianship. Include sections demonstrating both technical and lyrical ability. NO ACCOMPANIST is required and a piano will not be available. It does NOT need to be memorized.
PERCUSSIONISTS – see attached document for percussion audition materials
2) Sight Reading – Be prepared to sight read a few selections which will help us determine if you are ready to perform competently in a once/week ensemble. Practicing selections you are unfamiliar with will help you prepare for the audition.
3) Scales and Arpeggios – Prepare the major keys up to three flats and three sharps on your instrument (both tongued and slurred), in as many octaves as you can comfortably execute. A tempo of sixteenth notes at quarter note = 88 is recommended. Also prepare the chromatic scale (ascending and descending) over the entire range you are comfortable on your instrument. Percussionists should be prepared to demonstrate scales and basic rudiments.
There will be an expanded number of CYWE ensembles this year and the Wind Ensemble will be the most advanced group. If you only want to be considered for CYWE Symphonic Band, then you only need to prepare # 1, 2, & 3 above. CYWE Wind Ensemble: Prepare the attached excerpt for your instrument ONLY if you want to be considered for the CYWE Wind Ensemble.
