OLD AND NEW SURPRISES OF COMMON TIME: HOW BACH AND VIVALDI USED COMMON TIME DIFFERENTLY AND WHY WE CARE

Baroque composers often used common time as pairs of 2/4 measures, with beats one and three equally strong and each just as good for starting a melody. If a theme in a Vivaldi concerto shifts between starting on beat one and beat three, this is business as usual, not something to “bring out” in performance. This is old news for musicologists, but fresh for many performers. What the musicologists don’t know is that statistical analysis puts Bach much closer to modern practice than Vivaldi. Vivaldi’s shifts are arbitrary, but Bach’s have meaning within larger patterns — patterns which performers can observe and inhabit.

When Bingley's taciturn friend Fitzwilliam Darcy shows an interest in the opinionated and spirited Elizabeth, the situation becomes more complicated than either of them expect. The fire and wit of Jane Austen's classic 1813 romance shines through in this vibrant new adaptation.

Everyone loves spotting musical connections, especially in film music, where dense intertextuality abounds. But influence-spotting alone doesn’t equal musical insight. Nowhere is this truer than in John Williams’ Star Wars scores, long subject to claims of borrowing from Stravinsky, Holst, Korngold and others. This talk revisits such comparisons — often overstated and under-analyzed — while shifting focus to referentiality within and across the Skywalker Saga. Beyond the familiar topic of leitmotivic recurrence, I explore subtler echoes shaped by distinctively cinematic constraints and affordances. In doing so, I pressure simplistic ideas about similarity and rehabilitate George Lucas’s oft-mocked but musically fertile notion of the “rhyme.”

A Festival of Student-Created New Works

Transmigration, so named for “the movement from one place to another” or “the transition from one state of being to another,” features six teams of CCM Acting students who craft and then perform original 30-minute shows simultaneously in different locations throughout CCM Village. Transmigration audience members will have the opportunity to experience four different works of their choosing in one spectacular evening.

GUESS WHO?: VOICE AND LIMINALITY IN 2020s MEDIA
Katherine Meizel, Professor of Ethnomusicology from Bowling Green University
A game-show panel tries to identify cartoonishly-masked celebrities after listening to them sing. Another panel decides who among a group must be the best singer, based only on lip syncing. Thousands of TikTok videos feature a bland digital voice that hides the posters' own, or pass around a simulacrum of a voice whose original context has shattered into pieces that can no longer be fit back together. More than simply acousmatic, these televised or streamed voices demand that viewers attend to sonic and embodied presence and absence in new ways, to listen and imagine to something equally new that lives between the lines. This presentation will highlight how, in the 2020s, voice is heard and enacted as shaping liminal spaces and temporalities.

Enjoy a deliciously sweet performance of original works by CCM Dance faculty members Shauna Steele and Thomas Bell, and selections from The Nutcracker ballet. Shauna Steele's piece will later be performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2026. New CCM Dance Faculty member Hee Ra Yoo choreographs "Waltz of the Snowflakes" from Act I of The Nutcracker. The performance will also include selections from Act II of The Nutcracker. On Christmas Eve, the Nutcracker Prince takes a curious young girl, Clara, on an adventure to the Land of Sweets. The Sugar Plum Fairy welcomes them with a celebration featuring cakes, candies and many colorful dances performed by characters of the realm.

SOUNDING PEACE: ACOUTIC PRACTICES AND RESONANT MEMORY AFTER THE 30 YEARS' WAR

When the Peace of Westphalia was signed in 1648, Europe had endured three decades of war that had altered both political structures and the sonic environment of daily life. The transition from war to peace was not immediate, nor was it silent. This talk examines how postwar communities made peace audible through new sonic practices, e.g., chorales in Osnabrück, symbolic tournaments in Nuremberg, and children’s hobby-horse processions commemorating peace. Dietlinger proposes the concept of resonant memory to understand how sound, when ritualized and repeated, structured the experience of peace and gave it a lasting cultural form.
