Private (1:1) Instrument Lesson Policy

CCM provides students with 1:1 instrument/voice/composition instruction to fulfill the requirements for the degree as listed below. Students who have exhausted their supply of lessons may enroll in elective-level lessons as available. Elective-level lessons are taught by advanced graduate assistants.

Bachelor of Music (BM) - All Majors Except for Commercial Music Production

  • 8 semesters of major or concentration lessons as required for the degree
  • Students pursuing a double-major receive 8 semesters as required for each major
  • Students who are pursuing a double-major over a 5-year period should work with their instructor to plan how to distribute the 8 semesters of lessons, recitals, and board requirements in each area over the 5 years

Bachelor of Music (BM) in Commercial Music Production

  • 4 semesters of CMP Applied Study as required for the degree

Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Music

  • Up to 8 semesters of group, secondary, or elective-level lessons on a space-available basis
  • Concentration-level lessons and Commercial Music Production (CMP) Applied lessons are by audition only. CMP lessons are limited to 4 semesters 
  • Students may take 1:1 lessons on one instrument per semester
  • Students must make their intent to take 1:1 lessons known to the faculty program advisor by April 15 for Fall semester lessons and November 15 for Spring semester lessons

Music Minors

  • Students may take group lessons on a space-available basis. 1:1 lessons are not available to music minors

Master of Music (MM)

  • 4 semesters of lessons as required for the degree
  • Students pursuing double-majors receive 4 semesters as required for each major
  • Students who are pursuing the double-major over a 3-year period should work with their instructor to plan how to distribute the 4 semesters of lessons, recitals, and board requirements in each area over the 3 years

Artist’s Diploma (AD)

  • 4 semesters of lessons as required for the degree

Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA)

  • 4 semesters of lessons as required for the degree
  • Students may receive two additional semesters of lessons (total 6 semesters) if the student is enrolled full time in the third year of study
  • Some students choose to complete all DMA coursework in 2 years (60 credits @15 credits/semester x 4 semesters). There is no requirement to stretch coursework over 3 years
