Title: Adjunct Assistant Professor of Jazz Guitar
James E. Smith studied guitar with Marty Ellis and composition with Eddie Baker, and he performed as a jazz soloist with Nathan Davis, Frank Foster, Cecil Bridgewater, Clea Bradford and Melvin Rhyne. He is the author of Jazz Guitar: Theory and Technique and Symmetrical Scales of Guitar (Studio P/R-Columbia Pictures Publ.) and Reading Jazz Rhythms and Bebop Riffs (CSU Music Press). A recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities Grant for the study of Wes Montgomery, he is also the director of the CCM Jazz Guitar Ensemble.
In addition to his CCM duties, he has taught at Central State University since 1980.
