Choral Intensive

The summer 2023 Choral Intensive offers two tracks for particpants — the International Conducting Training Program and the Choral Conducting Workshop. Learn more about the tracks below.
International Conducting Training Program
- Dates: July 8-July 15, 2023
- Tuition: $975 (campus housing and parking are available for an additional fee)
- Auditions: Required
The International Conducting Training Program (ICTP) is a rigorous and competitive opportunity providing advanced conducting training for professionals seeking to gain experience and guidance from CCM’s renowned conducting faculty. ICTP Fellows, accepted by audition only, will receive intensive instruction in score analysis, work with a professional chorus and orchestra, and participate in the CCM Choral Conducting Workshop.
ICTP Conducting Fellows will prepare masterworks for performance during the week-long festival, engaging in all areas of preparation and working one-on-one with the faculty.
Reading Sessions and Programming
Walton publication, GIA and the Dale Warland Singers Library will be used as source material to build unique reading sessions. The sessions will focus on new works as well as works from the choral canon. Participants will be provided with scores to take home as well as having the opportunity to see works from the Dale Warland Singers Library. Along with these sessions, Earl Rivers will explore the style and repertoire of the early Baroque period, including works be Heinrich Schütz and Claudio Monteverdi. These sessions are designed to coordinate and expand the exploration of Bach’s Magnificat in D.
Vocal and Choral Pedagogy
Led by Brett Scott, Quinn Ankrum and Daniel Weeks, sessions will be given in choral and vocal pedagogy. Topics such as body mapping, voice specific training and questions of vowel modification and registration will be included. Participants will build tools to broaden their ability to work with singers of all voice types and backgrounds.
Conducting Technique
Brett Scott, Earl Rivers and Joe Miller will lead sessions in conducting technique. Participants will be able to interact in small groups and in private lessons. One of the highlights of the week will be the rehearsal observations of the Bach Magnificat in D. Miller will lead observations and question/answer sessions on rehearsal process, performance style, and conducting technique.
Voice
CCM Voice Facutly members, Quinn Ankrum and Dan Weeks, will be available for instruction for vocal technique along with sessions on vocal pedagogy and group vocal techniques.
Duruflé Requiem
Evenings will be a time for singing with study and performance of Duruflé’s masterwork. Accompanied by Michael Unger, CCM professor of organ and harpsichord, this performance will take place at Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Cincinnati with the cathedral’s new Richards, Fowkes & Co. organ.

Choral Conducting Workshop
- Dates: July 9-July 15, 2023

- Audition: Not required
Offering exceptional training in choral pedagogy, literature, and performance, the CCM Choral Conducting Workshop is open to all musicians, and is especially geared toward choral educators, church musicians and others who work with choral groups. Participants will also intersect with participants in CCM’s International Conducting Training Program.
The workshop will be a week-long immersion in new pedagogies and literature with participants receiving daily training in voice pedagogy, choral pedagogy, performance practice and exploring a wide range of historic and modern repertoire.
